The Passing of Barla Board Member, Stuart Evans

BARLA Board of Managements Stuart Evans 68yrs old has sadly passed away in hospital last Thursday after a short illness.

Stuart was a long standing member of York and Selby RL Referees Society and for over forty years a match official with the RFL. He is the only match official to be named in the York Rugby League Legends as formed by the York City Knights RLFC.

Stuart won many awards including last year the RFL Community Match Official of the Year. This year Stuart won a 2016 Active York Sports Award for outstanding contribution to the game and was nominated in the Sporting Hero category at the York Community Pride Awards

As recent as last month BARLA President Spen Allison a long time friend of Stuart and the York & District ARL presented him with an award for outstanding service to the amateur game.

Spen Allison said,

“I was shocked and speechless when I was informed of Stuarts passing I had visited him in hospital a few days earlier and we had one of many good chats I’ve had with him over the years. I didn’t think for one minute this would happen after I lost spoke to him”.

BARLA Chair Sue Taylor,

“On behalf of BARLA, it’s District Leagues and all amateur clubs in the country I was saddened to be informed of Stuarts passing and all our thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this sad time.

“I got to know Stuart when he became a member of the BARLA Board of Management and he was passionate about the amateur game and were he wanted it to move forward in years to come. He will be missed by everyone in the game.”

Stuart’s funeral will take place at 1.00pm on Friday 9th December at York Crematorium YO23 2QD followed by the post funeral reception that will be held at the South Bank Social Club, York, YO23 1DJ
