MAURICE OLDROYD FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS

The funeral of BARLA Patron and former Chair Maurice Oldroyd will take place on Wednesday 8th February 11am at Southgate Methodist Church, Langdale Street, Elland, HX5 0JL.

Maurice who sadly passed away aged 87yrs old formed a rugby league side Old Centralians when leaving school, before playing open age at Underbank Rangers and Crosland Moor (now Moldgreen ARL).

Before taking up the whistle as a referee and joining the Huddersfield & District RL Referees Society climbing to the position of President of the Society in 1972.

Maurice was one of those present at Greenside Working Mens Club on the 4th March when BARLA was formed becoming its Assistant Secretary and PRO. He became BARLA’s first paid National Administrator reaching the position of Chief Executive.

Maurice was elected as the Chair of BARLA in 2001 which he held until 2005 and on standing down became the proud second Patron of BARLA which he held with pride until his passing.

Of Maurice’s many highlights probably none stand out more so than a father watching his son Adam on New Years Eve in 2001 come onto the field from the substitutes bench for Elland in the BARLA Yorkshire Cup Final against Sharlston Rovers at Headingley Stadium. He saw Adam kick a drop a goal for an 11-6 lead his side before scoring the match winning try in the final seconds of the game for a 17-6 victory.

Maurice was also taken by surprise individually when during the 2013 World Cup held in this country he was awarded the ‘Spirit of Rugby League Award’ by the RL International Federation.
