BARLA THREE COUNTIES CHAMPIONSHIP 2019 U17 GAME ONE

U17s: CUMBRIA 18 YORKSHIRE 52

Yorkshire travelled to Millom to open the BARLA Three Counties Under 17 Championship and came away from Cumbria with a resounding win.

The White Rose took an early stranglehold on the game with early tries from Castleford Lock Lane centre Max Kirkbright and Normanton second row Luke Roe and with West Hull winger Tyler Fisher adding the first two of six goals to make it 12-0. Cumbria briefly threatened by Yorkshire's defence remained steadfast and before half-time they had scored two more tries through Fisher and opposite winger Elliott Bell (Castleford Panthers).

Yorkshire looked comfortable at half-time, but the Cumbrians made a good start to the second half with Martin Brun (Barrow Island) charging strongly. Club team-mate and skipper Will Hadwen then went close before Hensingham hooker Deon Crowe fired the pass inside for Brun to twist under the posts. Millom scrum-half  Jack Newbegin hit the first of three goals to put Cumbria on the scoreboard.

That elation was short lived and Yorkshire were ruthless, crossing for three quickfire tries from Ethan Davidson (Stanningley), Bell's second and a deserved effort for Wibsey's Callum McGrath. Before that McGrath effort, Cumbria again constructed some nice play with Millom prop Rio McQuiston chasing down a pin-point Newbegin grubber kick.

Trailing 38-12, the Cumbrian defence creaked and they conceded again when impressive substitute Byron Lisle (West Bowling) finished and Fisher completed his goal-tally.

Wath Brow centre Morgan Ackerly then showed his strength and pace, breaking from a scrum forty metres out to sail to the line. Newbegin's goal made it 18-44. Yorkshire still weren't done and finished strongly with two more tries before full-time as Wesley Bruins (Shaw Cross) sent Lisle in for his second try before Lisle turned creator with a pass for centre Frankie Gibson (Stanningley). Bruins was unable to add the final kick but the full-time whistle confirmed a comfortable winning margin.

Cumbria now travel to Lancashire to take on the Red Rose at Thatto Heath, with the second game in this U17s series taking place on Sunday November 3.
