Played in Valencia in warm conditions the BARLA Emerging Young Lions produced another  excellent performance winning 60-0, after leading 40-0 at the interval. In a great team performance Joe Willock (Castleford Lock Lane) put in a brilliant display going over for a hat-trick and converting half a dozen kicks from twelve attempts.

For Spain as in the opening game they gave it their all and even though defeated it is a great rugby leagfue education for both sides, which will see players from sides in the frame to play in their crucial 2017 Rugby League World Cup tie against Latvia in Riga later this month.

The game was as good as won in the opening quarter when the Lions scored four tries for a 20-0 lead. Karle Hunte (Clock Face Miners) went over on two minutes and after ten minutes of Spanish defence Jake Corrie (Kells) doubled the lead.

The visitors scored a further two tries in five minutes Will Johnson (Skirlaugh) going over on 15 minutes, followed by Jack Townend (Featherstone Lions) and Willock converted both.

From the restart Willock crossed and added the extras as he did after Daniel Burns (Wath  Brow Hornets) having only just come on the field.
Just before half time Conor Taylor(Wigan St Pats) scorched over for a quick double making half time score 40-0

In the second half Willock went over for his second try on 46 minute and converted and four minutes later Jack McConachie (Rochdale Mayfield) brought up the fifty.

Continuing with sparkling attacking rugby league Jordan O'Leary (Seaton Rangers) was next to go over on 57 mins for a converted try and Willock’s sixth conversion.

Willock had the final word in a man of the match performance as he completed his treble for an individual points total of 24 points and following his outstanding display in the opening game of the tour he was named Player of the Tour..

BARLA Emerging Young Lions Team Manager Neil McCartney;

Congratulations to everyone involved in the tour to Spain, iIt's been a huge honour to represent BARLA for everyone involved. We've all made friends for life. The players were an absolute credit and their families and clubs should all be proud of each and everyone of them.

“Thanks go out to all the families and friends that made the journey to support us. It meant a lot to have such excellent support behind us. A special mention goes to Joe Willock of Castleford Lock Lane who was awarded Player of the Tour for his outstanding performances in both games.”

Spain U21’s 18

BARLA Emerging Young Lions 6o

The debut meeting between the two national sides was held in the picturesque town of Torrent. The town is not your typical place for Rugby league but the young Spaniards stepped up to the challenge with a hearty performance and with some of the players only previously playing two games. The game and the tour has been overseen by Daz Fisher the Spanish national coach.

The game kicked off with a dominate start from the Young Lions with three unanswered tries by Joe Willock (Castleford Lock Lane), Jordan O’Leary (Seaton Rangers) and Mathew Johnston (Blackbrook Royals) two of the three tries were converted by Joe Willock.

After the impressive start by the Lions the young Spaniards started to get to used to the pace of the game and after some impressive hands the elusive Danny Garcia (Woolston Rovers) touched down and added to the points with his own conversion.

The game was evenly contested for the next ten minutes until the break in the stale mate was broken by Joe Willock after a good bit of support play from the young full back with a touched line conversion made the score 22-6. The Lions followed up with another try straight away through Jack McConachie (Rochdale Mirfield) all the time being dogged by aggressive Spanish defence. At half time the score was 26-6.

The second half kicked off under flood lights with a strong onslaught from the Lions however the Spanish defence managed to hold out until the 50th minute when Will Johnson (Skirlaugh) scored in the corner with a unsuccessful conversion. The Lions followed Johnson’s try up with a well-executed set piece scored by Caden Wilkinson ( Dewsbury Moor) with a conversion from Dean Rooney ( Wath Brow Hornets) .

The Spanish continued with their resilient performance and scored the following two tries through the Spainish left centre and Danny Garcia (Woolston) who converted both tries. The score was brought to 36-18.

The Lions stepped up a gear in the last 15 minutes and scored four unanswered tries through Jordan O’Leary (Seaton), Will Johnson (Skirlaugh), Jack Townend (Featherstone Lions) and Karl Hunt (Clockface Miners). The tries were converted by Joe Willock which brought the final score to 60-18.

The man of the match performances were contributed to the Spain number nine Gonzalo Morro and BARLA number nine Bradley Gott (Skirlaugh). The game was an exciting first test between the two sides and credit needs to go to the Spainish players and staff as an emerging nation in the sport. The next test is due to be played on Thursday at 9.30 pm against the Spain u 23’s in Valencia.

Coach Brett Turner: Said all the players and staff are very excited for this opportunity. To represent your Country is a huge honour, and something that we’re all very proud of. Every person that’s stepping foot on that plane has earned the right to be there. They’re played well for their Counties to get noticed, and they’ve all trained very hard in preparation for this. These tours are about more than just rugby, it’s also about these lads getting to see another Country and experience the culture that comes along with that.

This is the first rung on the ladder as far as International rugby goes, and I’m sure that a few of these players will have long international careers with BARLA.

It is a very talented bunch of players that we’re taking over there, but we’re not taking the Spanish opposition lightly. They’re going to be big, strong lads and we’ll have to be at our best to do well in what promises to be warm conditions.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors, Kingston Refrigeraton, Advent CSS Limited, Morley Waste Traders, D Woodhead Home Improvements and Unison. These tours are all self funded, and it would be a hell of a lot harder without the help of these generous companies.”
