DRIGHLINGTON OR QUEENS BE CROWNED YORKSHIRE CUP KINGS
Its fingers crossed for the BARLA Yorkshire County Cup Final to be played tomorrow Sunday 15th May at Rapid Solicitors stadium, Belle Vue, Wakefield the home of Wakefield Trinity Wildcats RLFC, kick off 2.00pm. The final has been postponed twice to date because of the weather so hopefully it will be third time lucky with a change of venue for this prestigious trophy.

The combatants for the final are Drighlington against Queens which for those of lack of local knowledge means that we have a ‘Leeds’ derby and a contest to show who can classify themselves as top dogs in the city.

There really is no such thing as a favourite in Cup Finals as form goes out of the window on these occasions and that will be the case on Sunday. Both sides play in the Pennine League Premier Division have met twice this season with Queens winning both games, at home in January 16-8 and last month at Drighlington 25-12.

On paper league leaders Queens go into this final the freshest with Drighlington who are third in the league, having played at second placed Sharlston Rovers in midweek and having lost the game 32-12 puts them out of the running for the Premiership.

Queens have also had the easier route to the final defeating Keighly Albion at home 40-0 in the First Round, Beverley 74-1 at home in the Second Round, Siddal A at Siddal 34-12 in the Third Round, Skirlaugh Bulls 72-6 at home in the Quarter Finals before being awarded the semi final over Crigglestone All Blacks.

Drighlington however began with a 118-2 home win over Harehills in First Round, a 32-6 win at Hull Wyke in the Second Round, a 20-6 home win over Hunslet Old Boys in the Third Round, Fryston Warriors (BARLA National Cup finalists this season) 31-14 at home in the Quarter Finals before defeating Sharlston Rovers (BARLA National Cup finalists this season) at Sharlston 42-6.

Both sides also know how to win the Yorkshire Cup with Drighlington defeating Elland 22-12 in the 2004-05 season and Queens overcame Sharlston Rovers 24-8 the 2007-08 season. So for the winners the spoils of victory, for the losers the tears of defeat.

Who will win no-one knows but there is sure to be a four figure gate for this eagerly awaited final which is sure to have fans of both sides and neutrals on the edge of their seats from start to finish whether the game is settled in eighty minutes extra time or golden point.

To everyone have a great day.
