BARLA Foiled in MX 9's
The BARLA side which had to make four last minute changes because of injuries and unavailability crashed out of the Carnegie Community MX9’s International Cup at the semi final stage to a London Origin side at the New River Stadium, the home of the London Skolers.

On a hot sunny day BARLA who were in Group 1 opened the proceedings on the main pitch against Serbia.
In an entertaining clash BARLA led by 12-0 at half time following three unconverted tries from Trevor Penrose (Skirlaugh), Michael Brown (Eastmoor Dragons) and skipper John McMullen (Wigan St Judes).

Matty Danville (Skirlaugh) scored a converted try with Ryan Robb (Kells) adding the extras as he did to the final BARLA try of the match scored by Shaun Goodway (Castleford Panthers).

In between the two second half tries Serbia went over for a consolation try.

The final Group game saw BARLA clash with the Great Britain Students, a win would send either side through in top spot, and a draw would send BARLA through as Serbia only lost 14-8 to the Great Britain Students.

Scrum half Kevin Brown (Eastmoor Dragons) opened the scoring for BARLA with a converted try, McMullen adding the extras before the game was level following a James Gibling try and Mark McKinley goal.
Stu Dunbar then gave the Students a 10-6 lead before BARLA hit back with Goodway scoring his second try of the tournament.

The conversion was missed and the match finished all square 10-10 and BARLA finished top of the Group.

In the quarter finals BARLA played the runners up of Group 2 Ireland and they found themselves 4-0 down at the break with Kieron Collins scoring for the Irish

BARLA took the lead following the first of a brace of tries scored by Danville with McMullen adding the extras and following the sin-binning of an Irish player Scott Woodcock (Thornhill Trojans) powered his way over to make it 10-4.

Ireland stormed back with an unconverted try by Brian Flanagan and it was game on until Danville went in for his second in the closing seconds to give BARLA a 14-8 win.

In the semi final BARLA played the London Origin a side including a number of Harlequins and London Skolars personnel.

McMullen who was violently sick prior to the game stood up to be counted as an amateur and led by example from the start. But a try in the opening and final minute of the half gave the Origin side a 10-0 lead.

Danville scored a converted try, his fourth of the tournament to cut the lead to 10-6 but the Origin team scored a further try and BARLA went out 14-6.

After the tournament BARLA Head Coach John Fieldhouse said,

“On a very hot day the side gave their all and went down in a keenly contested semi final. The lads gave one hundred per cent as they always do which was epitomised when John McMullen played in the semi final after he had been violently sick minutes prior to the game. They are amateurs and did their best and that’s all you can ask for.”

In the Final London Origin the hosts lost to International side France 18-4.
