GMB Union National Cup – Round One Review
Cumbria side Maryport progressed to the second round of the GMB Union National Cup with an 18-6 win over Batley Boys.

The hosts held a slender six-point advantage at half time, John Dollichin touching down with Simon Pattinson adding the goal. A Pattinson penalty ten minutes after the re-start increased their advantage, which further increased to 14 points five minutes later, following a Sean Crozier try and conversion from Pattinson.

A Hayden Listen try, goaled by Gareth Wilson, reduced the arrears for the Boys, but a James Jackson try five minutes before the whistle ensured Maryport’s passage into the next round.

Seaton also went into the hat for the next round, recording a 22-4 victory at Langworthy Reds. The Cumberland League champions did the business in the first half, crossing for five tries. Hooker Daniel Sowerby and county winger Paul Hopper shared four with Stephen Hodgson grabbing the fifth. Duncan Moyle added a second half penalty.

Great Clifton also went through with a 34-12 win at York Groves. Kevin Wilson grabbed two for the Lions with one each for Martin Wilson, Mark Fox, Danny Jones, and Scott Burgess who also kicked five goals.

Last year’s semi finalists Ellenborough had a relatively easy passage with a comprehensive 74-12 win at Heyshom Atoms. Elbra were home and dry by the break, holding a 50-4 advantage. Classy stand off Stephen Stoddart contributed 34 points with a hat trick plus 11 goals. Full back Dean Scholey also crossed for three, with Paul McGee adding two. Further tries came from David Sewell, Paul West, Barrie Murdock, Eddie Robinson and Jonty Gorley.

The Atoms managed to cross for three tries through Andrew Aldren, Brian Cambridge and Gary Lithgow. A special mention must go to referee Bob Smithies whose handling of the game was superb.

Lancashire Cup finalists Wigan St Cuthberts had to work hard for a 29-18 victory over Pennine League New Earswick.

Twice the Yorkshire side hit back to equalise, but St Cuthberts finally pulled clear with second half tries from Neil Fairhurst and Dean Byrom who kicked five goals in all and a drop goal.

Shaun Foster, Warren Molloy and Steve Speakman claimed earlier tries for the Saints, who led 18-12 at the break. Halfbacks Ben Jones (2) and Liam Gargan scored tries for New Earswick, who briefly led 12-6 at one point. Gargan kicked two goals and Carl Pallister one.

Four tries from Steve Froggett helped Upton to a 54-12 victory over Townville in an all Yorkshire League tie. Chris Hulme also contributed to the Upton scoring, grabbing himself a hat trick. Further tries came from Frazer Winks and Steve Beal, who also kicked nine goals. Townville replied through tries from Richard Corn and Byron Copper, who also kicked two goals.

Ashley James scored 22 points from two tries and seven goals as Myton Warriors overcame Northumbria University 54-0. Nick Whitiker also touched down twice with Lee Walton, Aaron Thewliss, Darren Hoggard, Danny Holmes, Richard Dinham and Alex Hobham also touching down.

Two tries each for Alwyn Whitiker and Nick Davies helped Hunslet Old Boys to a 58-0 win over Park Amateurs. Boys’ other tries came from Sam Thorpe, Amraz Hamid, Jamie Bradley, Wayne Foster, Mark Cunningham and Scott Atkin. Carl Briggs added nine goals.

Stanley Rangers recorded a 32-28 win over the Royal Navy side, thanks partly to Mark Robinson’s hat trick of tries. Neil Shackleton, Daniel Duce and Liam Crawley also touched down with Danny Grice adding three goals and Gareth Whitehead one goal as the Rangers came from a 10-18 half time deficit to progress to the second round.
