BARLA Young Lions in Ukraine
The BARLA Young Lions scored a total of 94 points to win the mini qualifying tournament here in the Ukraine and qualify for Sunday final when they will play against second placed Ukraine.

The tournament was based on a round robin format of short games of 15 minutes each way with teams from Ukraine, Ukraine Students, Moscow and of course the BARLA Young Lions.
Tomorrow (Saturday) 3 v 4 will play which is Ukraine Students v Moscow in a full 80 minute game, as is the BARLA v Ukraine game on Sunday.

BARLA Young Lions 40 v Ukraine Students 0

BARLA started the scoring as early as the second minute when Nathan Lucock finished clinically wide out, Tom Worthington calmly slotted over the touchline conversion, as he did when Perry Singleton crossed for BARLA’s 2nd try on 5 minutes.

On 8 minutes Ryan Watson scored a scorcher from 60 metres and once again Tom Worthington added the extras from wide out. This put BARLA firmly in control at the break, 18-0.

The Young Lions extended their lead on 18 minutes as the
backs showed their skills to allow Tom Worthington in for a try which he converted. The Ukraine Students began to tire and conceded needles penalties that BARLA ruthlessly punished as Ben Garner crossed on 21 minutes.

At the 24 minute mark prop Jorge Fairbank blasted over from 20 metres out and the trusty boot of Tom Worthington took the score to 34-0.

The 40 point mark was hit as Ryan Watson Bagged his second try and Tom Worthington converted.

BARLA Young Lions 36 v Moscow 4

The second game for the Young Lions saw them off to a quicker start than the first game when Leon Crelin split the defence to cross after only 45 seconds. Dylan Wilding was the next to show his paces as he flew down the wing from 50 metres out for a cracking try that Tom Rigby converted for a 10-0 lead.

BARLA then got a wakeup call as they conceded the only points of the tournament as Moscow went in from close range after BARLA had given up ground via penalties. H/T 10-4.

BARLA regained their fluency at the start of the second period and Connor Johnson went in for a try from close range, Tom Ripley added the extras. A neat chip through from Bradley Smith saw Dylan Wilding the quickest to react and touch down.

Centre Dougie Foster then got in on the act with a quick fire brace one of which Tom Hall converted and BARLA are coasting at 30-4, but they hadn’t finished and Connor Johnson claimed his second try of the game and Tom Hall sealed the win with the last conversion.

Goals: Tom Hall (2) Tom Rigby (1) Tom Ripley (1)

BARLA Young Lions 18 v Ukraine 0

From viewing the other games in the tournament it was obvious that the Ukraine were going to pose the biggest threat to the Young Lions. The Ukraine team was full of big strong athletic players who played the game very well and although the Young Lions had shown their try scoring flair in the earlier 2 rounds, it was their commitment to defence that won the day and nullified the Ukrainian attack.

It took 10 minutes for BARLA break down the home sides defence and it was that man Dougie Foster who provided the break through as he stepped his way through to score, Tom Worthington added the extras. H/T 6-0

The Lions had to work hard in the second period to keep Ukraine out and everyone put their bodies on the line for the cause, but on 21 minutes the Lions made the game safe when Joe Hingham’s kick in to the in-goal area was pounced on by Ryan Watson, Tom Worthington converted 12-0 to BARLA.

With the final whistle beckoning the Lions put the icing on the cake as another chip through saw the wilting Ukrainian players lose out on the chase to Connor Johnson who pounced on the ball for the try, Tom Worthingtons conversion concluded matters.
