Sean High at the GC Foster College Stadium, Kingston
The BARLA Great Britain Cougars Jubilee Tour came to a winning end as they defeated Jamaica to wrap up a 2-0 Test victory over Jamaica who played superbly coming back from 16-8 down to be level at the break. In the second half Jamaica cut another Cougars lead back to four points before the tourists cut loose again. To their credit the ‘Reggie Boys’ had the last word with the last try of the game and tour.
The Cougars scored ten tries which included a quartet of tries from James Delaney (Dewsbury Moor) who scored a brace in each half and 20 points from skipper John Paul Brocklebank (Egremont Rangers) with a try and eight.
There was pre game pressure for the Cougars though as Dan Morrow (Walney Central) pulled up with a reoccurrence hamstring which saw Adam Masson (Shaw Cross Sharks) come in from the cold and make the starting line-up.
Danny Sayle (Dalton) was stripped and went onto the bench as a further substitute for the Cougars.
The 3pm kick off suited the home side in the blistering heat ,and both sides tested each other’s defence in the opening exchanges, but after 5 minutes a lapse in defence of the Jamaican side saw Delaney cross in the right corner untouched. Skipper John Paul Brocklebank missed the extras.
There were further onfield disruptions for the Cougars on seven minutes which saw Chris Warren (Millom) retired injured and Danny Lynch (Pilkington Recs) came on to replace him as fullback.
15 minutes into the game Jamaica pressed the Cougars line but the Brits stood firm, although they conceded a penalty seen the home side bag two points with a Kemoy Whyte to make it 4-2.
From the kick off some hard tackling from Tom Richardson (West Hull) and James Barker (Milford Marlins) saw the Cougars retain the ball and Delaney grabbed his second from dummy half after some lazy marking, Brocklebank slotted the extras 10-2.
With 25 minutes played the Jamaican boys rallied well and retained the ball from the restart showing some good defence themselves but were unable to utilise the ball in a good areas on the Cougars 30 metre line.
On 32 minutes a bust through the Jamaica defence from James Fields (Hunslet Old Boys) and Brocklebank supporting well for them to offload to Lynch to go under the sticks for a converted try.
Two minutes later the Cougars broke up the middle but a final pass saw the home side race 50 metres up the pitch and then gain a penalty for obstruction. Then a good set of play out wide saw Ryan Grant stepped inside the Cougars centre to score the first of his brace and Whyte added a great conversion much to the crowd delight 16-8 to the Cougars.
Keeping up the pressure Jamaica made a good break down the right hand wing which was halted when fullback Lynch made a good one on one but again some ill discipline cost the Cougars another penalty which Whyte put over the uprights to cut the lead to six points.
The Cougars then dominated the home sides line but a sloppy pass was taken by Martin Thompson who raced 80 metres to score under the posts Whyte again added the extras it was now game on at 16-16.
The Cougars struggled to up there pace but the Jamaican could sense an upset and again pushed the tourist’s line but they held on and almost scored on the half time whistle with Jack Sinclair (New Earswick All Blacks) was bundled into
touch. HT 16-16
The Cougars began the quicker in the second half and Sayle added to the squad last minute thundered over on the left hand side after 42 minutes to make it 20-16.
Jamaica had a chance down the right side but winger Ryan Spence knocked on near the line, resulting in the Cougars pushing up the field with some good work from Barker and Jack Sutherland (Barrow Island) and a busting run from Fields got him over the line but unable to ground, he offloaded and Delaney was on hand to complete his hat-trick with a six pointer.
Jamaica responded superbly after the Cougars had been pushing on their line and Johnny Goulding (Cockermouth Titans) had knocked on. From the resulting scrum the ball was moved out quickly to Tyrone Rowe who broke down the left to race 80 metres to score, Whyte added and it was game on 26-22 to the Cougars.
On 50 minutes the Cougars forced their way up the Jamaica line and Tom Saunders (Hunslet Old Boys) was on the end off a crash ball to score under the posts for a converted try.
This lifted the forwards who began to dominate the Jamaican with the big Saunders and Fields hitting the middle hard. From a penalty on the Jamaica 25 line Barker made a half and Delaney backing up well took his pass for his fourth under the post to make it 38-22.
It became a bit fractious by both sides which resulted with Fields was sin binned for ill discipline and five minutes he was joined by Jamaica’s Robert Rodney’s following an illegal challenge.
The Cougars cut loose in the final ten minutes as Saunders was on hand again to charge onto the ball and skittle four defenders to grab his second for another six pointer, and on 75 minutes some hard running from Lyndon Robertson (Leigh East) and Barker gave Brocklebank the chance to chip, collect, score and convert his own try to bring up their half century.
Great work by Goulding and Barker set up a bursting run from Robertson to cross for their final six pointer if the tour.
Jamaica weren’t finished and had the final say of the game with a great good passage of play and several passes and quick hands gave the Jamaica side a length of the field try for Ryan Grant to finish the move Whyte kicked his sixth and final goal of the game.
BARLA Chair Spen Allison gave his thoughts on the game and the tour,
“The tour has been exceptional although we did win Jamaica will get great credit that it was all level at half time , I think the Jamaican guys gave us a fantastic contest and think the winner is certainly rugby league.
“I am pleased that BARLA have yet again crossed foreign soil to promote the game and help develop this great sport, I would also like to thank the Jamaican guys for the hospitality towards us.”
