THE COUGARS CLOCK UP SEVENTY IN BOLT LIGHTNING
JAMAICA INTERCOLLEGIATE ALL STARS ..(4) 10

BARLA GREAT BRITAIN COUGARS ..(24) 70

Sean High at the UWI Stadium, Kingston

The BARLA Great Britain Cougars
made it two out of two in their second game of the BARLA Jubilee Tour to Jamaica as they defeated the Jamaica Intercollegiate All Stars 70-10 after leading 24-4 at the break.

The damage was done in the opening fifteen minutes when the Cougars ran in four unconverted tries to lead 16-0 and take control of the game although the All Stars showed their one hundred per cent commitment to the cause as the tries ran in at regular intervals especially in the second half as Cougars ran up a further forty six points.

There was an unexpected guest who glanced over to the game which was Usain Bolt the Jamaica’s 100metres and 200 metres sprint double world record holder and double Olympic 2008 gold medal winner. However the large Jamaican crowd where glued to this exciting game promoted brilliantly by the Cougars, although they would have loved him in their ranks against the visitors.

Whether Bolt would have been able to stop the Cougars fourteen tries including four from Jack Ridsdill (West Hull) is debateable as he is used to running in spikes rather than boots!

After a good exchange by both sides in the opening 5 minutes the All Stars defence came up against a big hit from Dan Sayle (Dalton) and Tom Richardson (West Hull) to retrieve the ball for the Cougars.

The visitors then received a penalty to which saw Lyndon Robertson (Leigh East) come onto a crash ball and take three defenders over the line to score after 5 minutes but Danny Lynch (Pilkington Recs) couldn’t add the extras.

The Cougars cut loose with a hat-trick of tries in the following ten minutes. A break down the right hand side saw a long ball from Paul Corkhill (Egremont Rangers) to hit Jack Ridsdill to double the lead on eight minutes.

Four minutes some good work from Jack Sinclair (New Earswick) saw the team in a good position and a short ball to Sayle saw him cross in the left corner.

Ross Gainford (Kells) missed the conversion as he did on 15 minutes following a fourth try as Robertson took the ball up the middle for Gainford to throw the ball wide full back Troy Brophy (Warrington Wizards) who linked well to release Sinclair to cross in the left corner.

Some good work down the right hand side Corkhill scoot from dummy half to dummy his way through the defence to race 30 metres and release Phil Morrison (Thatto Heath Crusaders) in the corner, again the conversion was missed.

The Jamaican crowd erupted when wing man Adrian McKenzie went close to scoring with a great run only to be halted on the line. The Cougars retained the ball but some fierce tackling saw a spilled ball and Sheldon Brown raced 40 metres to score. Ryan Grant missed the conversion.

This rallied the All Stars team and they gained some energy and pushed the Cougars line hard and Romain Campbell was held up on the Cougars tryline. A good size crowd lifted the pace the All Stars team who had done their homework on Jamie Fields (Hunslet Old Boys). His first run saw a huge hit put the big man down much to the crowds delight. Field wasn’t stirred and got back up to take another ball in.

The Cougars withstood a further five minutes of hard pressure to end up down the park where Sayle was disallowed a try on the half hour.

The All Stars again picked up some steam but Tom Saunders (Hunslet Old Boys) cut their big prop down in two in middle of the park and gained a knock on to give the Cougars the ball back. Fields took the ball down the right side and threw a half back pass out to Morrison who crossed for his second, this time Ridsdill missed the conversion.

Some good running from James Barker (Milford Marlins) saw the Cougars come close to the line but Jonny Goulding (Cockermouth Titans) got tackled into touch. Again the Cougars broke down the right and an exchange of seven to eight saw Corkhill cross the line for linesman to disallow the try for forward pass.

The All Stars then pushed upfield and Jamaican centre McKenzie came close to scoring after a good set of play only to be halted by a Ridsdill and Goulding try saving tackle to go in 24-4 at the break.

On 42 minutes Brophy cut inside for the Cougars and was held up 5 metres from the line but he released to Jack Sutherland (Barrow Island) who threw the ball to Sinclair who took his try well with limited space in the corner with four 4 defenders charging in. This time John Paul Brocklebank (Egremont Rangers) missed the conversion 28-4.

Three minutes later a try made at Egremont Rangers saw Brocklebank pass to late team call up Clayton Sutton (Egremont Rangers), who broke the line and passed a inside ball back to Brocklebank. He found Corkhill who unselfishly gave the ball to Brophy to score. Brocklebank added the side’s first conversion to make it 34-4.

Five minutes a huge up and under from Brocklebank saw the All Stars full back spill the ball and Ridsdill was on hand to collect the ball and score under the posts for a six pointer.

On 52 minutes some hard graft from tireless Barker and Goulding saw the Cougars move up the pitch and then a brilliant dummy got Brocklebank through the line then to easily step the fullback and score. He then added a penalty goal straight from the kick off to make it 46-4.

The Cougars again were on the All Stars line but a silly pass saw the Jamaican team gain possession and pass the ball well to race all the way up to the visitor’s line only for the winger to drop the ball.

The Cougars were proving too strong and Sutherland took some rough ball and made hard yards and then spun the ball out to Ridsdill to cross for his hat-trick and Brocklebank’s extras took the score over the half century mark.

The All Stars heads had dropped and Ridsdill’s club beefy Richardson made a burst up the middle and much to his own surprise sold the fullback a dummy and scored under the posts for a converted try.

The All Stars very much to their credit still where trying to gain momentum and their hard work paid off when a good passage of play and some excellent hands gave Kyle Ferguson a try and Grant added the extras to make it 58-10.

The Cougars soon got back into the swing of things when Adam Masson (Shaw Cross Sharks) dived over in the corner and Brocklebank added a superb touchline conversion.

The Cougars scored their final try and points of the day following a Lynch scoot from the play the ball, he gave it to Brocklebank who found Ridsdill who went over untouched for a quartet of tries.

Brocklebank who came on after the break had the last word converting the try to make it 70-10 finishing with a personal tally of eighteen points Mom James Barker

BARLA Great Britain Cougars coaches Mick Fishwick and Daryl Cardiss where both pleased with the performance, Cardiss said

“We were more clinical and we started off straight from the start as on Sat (Saturday) we took twenty to thirty minutes to get into the swing. James Barker was a rock in defence and attack and deserved the man of the match. Clayton Sutton was brought in at last minute when Dan Morrow pulled up in the match warm up and a facial infection halted Gavin Conroy from stripping. David Jones is still nursing a shoulder injury.”

BARLA Great Britain Cougars Team Manager Phil Johnson added,

“I thought we were great tonight and the lads who come in where really trying. As they are desperate for a Test place Sat (Saturday) and I’m pleased I not the coach. Both Mick and Daryl will have a headache in selection for the final test game Sat (Saturday). I was also pleased for James (Barker) getting man of the match he was disappointed to not get a start on Saturday but he was tireless tonight.”
