WARLA State of Origin Challenge
WARLA STATE OF ORIGIN

Lancashire Ladies ..(18) 40

Yorkshire Ladies ..(0) 4

At the Woodlands Memorial Ground, Lytham St Annes

WARLA State of Origin concluded BARLA’s Diamond Jubilee National Cup Finals weekend and Rugby4All ethos in this blockbuster were Lancashire Ladies kept their grips on the shield to lead 2-0 after an emphatic 40-4 victory over the ‘White Rose’ of Yorkshire Ladies.

The gathered crowd created a great atmosphere and for first timers at women’s game again it came as a shock and a surprise to the quality of play by both sides in their tackling and attacking play. The sponsors of the youth and junior finals thought that it was a great spectacle having never seen a game of this magnitude.

In a full on game and given the conditions both sides played some cracking football but Lancashire seemed to want it more throughout the game and the Yorkshire Ladies appeared to freeze on the big occasion.

It was physical throughout the full eighty minutes and Lancashire skipper and assistant coach Joenie Aspin led her troops around the field well but the star of the show was the ‘Red Rose’ fullback Tara Stanley who must have covered every blade of grass able to step off either foot, drive forward put in the tackles as well a score a superb try and kick five from seven for a personal tally of 14 points.

The rest of her teammates in the forwards and backs all contributed well in the victory.

For Yorkshire who will be even more determined next year in Origin 3, Devon Clegg, Megan Sheard, Lucy Palmer, Jade Bennett and Lyndsey Cunnett were awesome in the forwards but their backs for the majority of the game were completely overshadowed by the Lancashire backs and halves.

Lancashire took early control of the game and scored after three minutes Aspin burrowed through from close range from the play the ball for a converted try.

Yorkshire came back into it for the next ten minutes in the Lancashire half but their defence held firm repelling the Yorkshire drives and attacks.

On 17 minutes Lancashire hit back to double their lead following a penalty, as Katy Stevens drove over from 15 metres despite valiant tackling from Yorkshire.

Both sides were giving as good as they got as it became a slog fest down the middle but Lancashire struck again minutes from the break after moving downfield. On the last tackle the ball went through several pairs of hands before Aspin passed outside to Stanley who stepped off her left foot through a gap and went 40 metres to score and Stanley added the extras.

On 43 minutes Stanley was at it again as she got the ball and cut inside, as she was about to be tackled she put a crossfield bomb outside to the wing she had come from, the ball bounced kindly for the chasing Naomi Williams who took the ball to go over in the corner, but Aspin couldn’t add the extras.

On 56 minutes Yorkshire failed to deal with another Stanley bomb knocking on and from the scrum the ball was moved out to Nat Weaving on the third tackle and she bulldozed through the defence to score a converted try to make it 28-0.

Despite the greater vocal support for Yorkshire there was no way back and Lancashire scored two back to back tries on the hour. Superb handling saw the ball go out to centre Chantelle Crowe to score and Stanley missed her only conversion of the game and then Aspin made a superb break through the Lancashire defence and unselfishly passed outside to Laura Burke to drive over for a four pointer to make it 36-0, Aspin missing the extras.

A spell of pressure saw Yorkshire deservedly score a try for their efforts throughout the game when Claire Hirst crossed the whitewash. Aleishya O’Niel couldn’t add the extras.

Lancashire though had the last word with the final play of the game to bring up the forty points when Gemma Hennesey and Aspin combined for Claire Rigby to score out wide.

Although the conversion missed it didn’t matter Lancashire had won the ‘War of the Roses ‘to finish off a great weekend of rugby league shame about the weather.
