| LANCASHIRE'S LAST UNDER 17S BARLA COUNTY TRI SERIES CLINCHER |
|
 |
Lancashire .. (18) 28
Cumbria .. (0) 16
At Crusader Park, Thatto Heath Crusaders ARLFC
A sensational try in the last minute of a pulsating clash helped Lancashire retain the title after the crown had looked destined to go to Yorkshire on points’ difference.
The Red Rose county had gone into the final game of the series needing to win by at least nine points to deny Yorkshire, who had a superior points difference of only three, indicating how closely contested this season’s series has been.
Cumbria, meanwhile, had to prevail outright to finish top of the pile.
As time began to run out, with Lancashire 24-16 ahead, Yorkshire were preparing to renew their orders for silver polish – until a moment of magic by Lancashire fullback Jack White transformed the situation.
White, at dummy-half close to the Cumbrian line, fired out a pass to winger Danny Carney `American Football-style’, backwards through his legs.
Carney romped over in the corner unopposed, leaving Lancashire Manager Phil Johnson reflecting:
“That was an outstanding piece of skill – I’ve never seen anything better.”
The try ended a gallant rally by Cumbria from 18-0 down at the break in which Sean Mumberson converted two of touchdowns by Kieran Featherstone, Connor Holliday and Matty Henson.
Lancashire, meanwhile, had established their lead with a try and three goals by White, with Sean Kenny, Ryan Hickman and Mark Nicholson adding touchdowns and Connor Johnson kicking a goal.
