Martin Brough honoured
Wath Brow Hornets stalwart Martin Brough has been honoured for his commitment to the game of rugby league

West Cumbria Youth League representative Joe Elliott presented Martin with the Bill Whalley Memorial award at the weekend in recognition for the time he has spent working with both the open age and youth sections at Wath Brow Hornets.

The trophy is awarded in memory of the late Bill Whalley, a former mayor of Workington, who was heavily involved in the sport and the local community.

His family approached the Cumberland League wanting to honour his memory and it was decided to have an annual memorial trophy that would be presented to someone who had worked hard for ARL in the area, including open-age and youth leagues.

A panel was set up with representatives from the Cumberland League and the West Cumbria Youth League and Martin was a popular choice for the award.

Roger Blair, chairman of the Cumberland ARL, said: “Like a lot of people in amateur rugby league, Martin has put a lot of hard work into both open age and junior rugby.

“People like Martin are the lifeblood of the sport and you cannot fault his commitment to rugby league over the years.

“He continues to do so much work with the kids and is a very worthy recipient of the award.”

Martin is currently the youth secretary & C W O with the Hornets but has served in a number of roles over the years.
