BARLA GREAT BRITAIN LIONS NAME INITIAL 29 MAN SQUAD FOR THE UNISON PERTH TOUR

BARLA Great Britain International Manger Mick Turner has announced an initial twenty nine man squad which will reduce to twenty six for the BARLA Great Britain Lions Unison Perth Tour in June.

He has also named Yorkshire and Skirlaugh prop forward Trevor Penrose as captain of the Lions side.

The Lions fly ‘Down Under’ on the 6th June and will play four games before they return on the 27th June. The highlight of the tour will be a game against a Western Australia Select side being played as a curtain raiser to the NRL clash between Russell Crowe’s South Sydney and Brisbane Broncos in front of over 20,000 spectators.

BARLA Great Britain International Manager Mick Turner,

“I have named a twenty nine man squad for the Unison Perth Tour and this will be reduced to twenty six when the Lions leave these shores in June. There are a number of training sessions before the final squad is named and the coaching and medical staff will have an input as we cannot afford to take injured players on a tour of this magnitude.

“I have been in constant dialogue with rugby league parties in Perth and as a result the highlight of the tour will the Lions final game against Western Australia Select side being played as a curtain raiser to the NRL clash between Russell Crowe’s South Sydney and Brisbane Broncos in front of over 20,000 spectators. It will be the biggest audience that all the players have played in front of to date in their careers.

“I have named Trevor Penrose as captain of the squad. The Yorkshire and Skirlaugh prop forward is a former BARLA Open Age Player of the Year and has a vast amount of international experience having come through the BARLA International Pathway and toured South Africa and the South Pacific and Dubai previously. His dedication and enthusiasm is there for all to see and he will be able to pass on all his experience and advice.

“Ryan Fieldhouse is in the squad and is finishing is commitments with Leigh East before turning professional. If other people at all ages did the same the Amateur game would be a lot more stable.

“As with all BARLA tours we are always looking for sponsors to take the burden of the cost away from the players and we thank Unison for their continued support. Should any further companies wish to be involved we would welcome their support.”
