Carnegie Challenge Cup
The 3rd Round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup takes place this weekend following the first true draw of the RFL’s world famous cup competition when all the sides going into the same hat. Thirty six clubs will be battling to go through go the next round were they dream of being paired against super league opposition to bring the ‘magic of the cup.

Fingers crossed that there are plenty of shocks this weekend and that’s with no disrespect to the semi professional outfit that play in the Co-operative Championship and Championship 1 divisions.

At the Leigh Sporting Village on Sunday afternoon the Centurions will be the third Leigh side in action over this busy weekend when they take on Cumbrian giants Wath Brow Hornets last years 3rd Round giant killers when they defeated London Skolars. Hornets have a great cup pedigree having twice won the BARLA National Cup in the ‘naughties’ and currently in fourth spot in the Hatton’s National Conference League Premier Division.

Leigh’s other two representatives Leigh Miners Rangers and Leigh East of same above division will have played here on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon, the former against Whitehaven and the latter against Hunslet Hawks. Both are capable of winning both ties and I am hoping that they do not give their oppositions too much respect and that they get a fair crack of the whip on the field. Although I hope they both go through I am of the opinion (head on chopping block here) that the shock may come on Saturday. Although the Hawks won their opening league last weekend they had to play a previously postponed Northern Rail Cup game at home to Featherstone Rovers. Will they have enough time to recover, only time will tell.

Also played yesterday was Siddal’s trip to Doncaster who leaked 58pts last weekend and have yet to win this season having conceded 144pts in the Northern Rail Cup. Siddal who completed a NCL Premiership and BARLA National Cup double last season are in second spot this season and progressing quietly in the National Cup. I fancy the Halifax side to sneak home.

Other BARLA sides Wigan St Judes and Thatto Heath Crusaders travel to Widnes Vikings and Sheffield Eagles (Super Giant Killers who defeated Wigan at Wembley in 1998 to win the Challenge Cup) respectively this afternoon. I think the party will be over for these two BARLA sides but hope they can make some money from their trips.

From over the hills Ovenden play their ‘home’ tie against Halifax at the Shay, Drighlington of the Pennine Premier Division do similar against the Dewsbury Rams at the Tetley’s Stadium and Hunslet Warriors of the Unison Yorkshire League Premier Division travel to Barrow Raiders.

Other amateur sides Warrington Wizards, Leeds Met University, Blackwood Bulldogs, and the Royal Navy are also involved and I hope that they and all the BARLA clubs involved do their respective leagues proud.
