Combined Lancs came crashing down to earth with a bump after being beaten in a close fought contest against a gritty and determined Cheshire outfit. The league leaders with several players missing from the MET romp were limited to 15 players due to injuries and work committments, along with the late withdrawal of a recognised referee C/L backs were against the wall before a ball had even been kicked.

As early as the 5th minute Cheshire hit down the middle of the field to score between the posts to give them a 6-0 lead.
Combined Lancs then needed to up the anti to get back into the game or it was going to be a long afternoon.

Excellent running from Meeks/Elvidge orchistrated by Ashcroft and Atherton put the presure back on Cheshire and duly paid off with 2 quick tries in succesion from Clark and Fogarty both goaled by Atherton.

Cheshire always a strong home team hit back with an unconverted try to get within 2 points before excellent ball work from Maddocks sent Burrows in at the corner only to be brought back with a strongly disputed forward pass.

Moments later C/L still smarting from the disallowed try regained control with smooth passing from Atherton and Swift which provided an opening for Green’s first touch of the ball to touch down in the corner to bring the score to 16-10 half-time lead.

The 2nd half started slowly with both teams building on strong defences to which Maddocks weaved his way through the Cheshire defence to score under the posts converted by Atherton to further enhance C/L score to 22-10.

Cheshire hit back straight from the start and took advantage of some weak C/L tackles and dropped balls to score 2 converted tries to set up a tense last 20 minutes.

With the scores level at 22-22 C/L again surged forward from there own line with Swift coming onto a wide ball to run 70yds to score wide out converted by Atherton.

With 10 minutes remaining and the scores at 28-22 in favour of C/L it was a case of they would sit back and wait for the whistle, least this was the plan but Cheshire had other idea’s and with several disputed penalties going against C/L Cheshire used this to press forward and score 2 unconverted tried late on put C/L to the sword closing the score in favour of Cheshire 30-28.

Overall a good rehearsal for the up and coming semi-finals and due to last round of results both teams will again be slugging it out on 17th Sept at Lancs Hutton HQ ko 3pm, both will be attempting to reach this years main final against either West Yorks or the MET to be played again at Lancs Hutton HQ 2nd October 3pm KO.
