Wakefield & District ARL Reach the Final of 2008 InterTown Competition
Leeds ARL .. 4 (0)
Wakefield ARL .. 17 (6)

at Stanningley ARLFC, Sunday 6th July 2008

The Wakefield & District ARL side booked a berth in the final of the 2008 Inter Town competition with a stunning 17-4 victory over Leeds ARL on Sunday at Stanningley.

Wakefield, who would have finished bottom of the three-team table if they had lost, have now leaped into pole position. And next Saturdays match at Castleford Panthers, where Castleford & Featherstone will host Leeds, will determine the identity of their opponents in the final on Saturday July 19, venue yet to be arranged.

Leeds, with a superior points difference, must win to go through, while a draw will suffice for Castleford.

Wakefield opened their account 5 minutes in which would turn out to be the only try of the first half when Danny Duce of Stanley Rangers finely finished a James Byrom offload edging the touchline, Eastmoors Ady Mulcahy couldn’t add the goal, on the wide Stanningley pitch.

After 25 minutes on sustained pressure with Sean Emblem and Andy Booth making hard yards up the middle Leeds ill discipline lead to being reduced to 12 men for 10 minute spell and Ady Mulcahy punished the home side further goaling the resulting penalty to extend the lead 6-0 which held until the half time interval.

The opening stages looked to weigh towards the hosts who held the majority of possession but the Wakefield stood solid under prolonged periods of pressure. Having weathered 15 minutes of solid defence, sensing a tough second period Ady Mulcahy added a 25 meter drop goal to put the visitors 7 points to nil ahead.

With the newly added buffer Wakefield grew in confidence and promoted the ball well with Matt Steadman, Geoff Hick and Phil Hodgson pulling Wakefield deep out of their own half.

A barnstorming drive from Andy Booth well supported by Lee Bettison and finally Geoff Hick of Crofton Cougars put Wakefield under the sticks with Mulchay improving to a 13 point lead.
Almost immediately after Wakefield pressed on and took advantage of a spilt ball deep in Leeds’ half with Carl Saville collecting and attacking the flanks with smooth hands spreading the ball to wingman Michael Jadynak of Eastmoor Dragons who finished with style.

With 10 minutes remaining Leeds threw everything at the visitors who held out heroically but with only minutes left on the clock Aaron Henry of Queens slipped the net out wide for a late consolation try.
