Mark Norris Construction NW Counties League Round Up
Bank Quay Bulls require one point from their final three matches to become the first Warrington team ever to win the Mark Norris Construction NW Counties League championship.

They virtually ended the threat from Pilkingtons when they beat the Glassmen 24-18 at Dallam Fields. Defeat has left Pilkingtons needing to beat Halton Simms Cross at Widnes next Saturday to stand a chance of securing runners up spot.
Simmies and Pilks are also due to meet in the Premiership Cup final on April 19.

Both sides scored four tries with four goals by Anthony Braide making the scoring difference but you had to feel sorry for Barry Pope who got a hat-trick for the visitors and finished up a loser.

Bulls also won the power battle up front although Pilks probably played the better rugby.

Pope gave Pilks the lead with a try in the corner to which he added a superb goal in the windy conditions.

Six minutes later Frank Bird managed to get the ball down despite being held by five defenders, and Braide’s goal put the sides level.

A smart dummy from half back by Steve Rawsthorne saw Pilks snatch a half-time lead, but once Bulls got in front after the break they held on.

Two John Braddish tries helped them to an 18-10 lead before Pope claimed his second try on 69 minutes.

The game was made safe for Bulls when Phil Braddish touched down on 74 minutes, but Pope completed his treble in the last minute.

Best for Bulls were Chris Ross, Craig Millington and Anthony Braide, while Andy Burns, Mark Ashton and Andy Lyons starred for Pilks.

Halton Simms Cross kept alive their hopes of finishing in the top two for the eighth successive year, when they won 18-6 at Wigan St Cuthbert’s.

Simmies took control in the first half with tries from Owain Brown and Paul Walsh, with Paul Roberts landing two goals.
However, the Wiganers made more of a contest of it in the second half with both teams scoring six points.

After a Roberts penalty, Gareth Blake scored a try for St Cuthbert’s which Jamie Dallimore goaled, before Alan Billington scored the last try of the game.

Warren Molloy, Shaun Foster and Dallimore were the pick of the home side, and Paul Walsh, Keiron Kavanagh and Neil Percival were best for Simmies.

Haydock dropped a crucial home point in their bid to return to the premier division when they drew 22-22 against Folly Lane.

That puts them a point behind Ashton Bears who won 32-20 at Adlington Rangers – although Haydock have a game in a hand.
Ashton entertain Haydock next weekend.
